FTC names privacy expert as chief technologist

The Federal Trade Commission on Tuesday named an outspoken Internet privacy expert, Ashkan Soltani, as its chief technologist in a move that signals the agency's focus on protecting consumers' online privacy. A computer scientist and technology researcher, Soltani has advised several leading news organizations in reporting on complex technical issues related to Internet privacy.

Eighty potential bidders have submitted applications to participate. Smaller carriers like Guam-based Docomo and Bluegrass Wireless have thrown their hats in the ring, but the ones to watch are AT&T, T-Mobile, Verizon and Dish, which needs a strong broadband play and thinks wireless will be the way to go.

While FiOS did well on the residential side with 114K new video subscribers, commercial FiOS operations have been lagging. On the enterprise side, FiOS revenue was down 4.4 percent in the quarter. Analysts assert that cable competition is cutting into FiOS commercial operations.

Time Warner Cable drops new Arris gateway into LA, New York City markets

Time Warner Cable has upped its DVR capability in its Los Angeles and New York City markets with a new six-tuner gateway from Arris. Arris’ DCX3600 gateway features a 1-terabyte hard drive, which features up to six times more storage capacity than current Time Warner Cable DVRs.

RCN Business has installed a point-of-presence at 325 Hudson in New York City in order to provide its business customers with more interconnection options. On the flip side, 325 Hudson customers gained access to other markets served by RCN Business including: Boston, Chicago, Lehigh Valley, Philadelphia and Washington, D.C.

Suddenlink first cable operator to sign up for Sony Movie Channel

Suddenlink Communications is the first cable operator to sign a carriage agreement with Sony Movie Channel. Sony Movie Channel, which is broadcast in HD, has deals in place with Dish Network, DirecTV, Verizon, AT&T and CenturyLink.

SeaChange names Samit as new CEO

Multi-screen software vendor SeaChange International has hired Jay Samit as its new CEO. Samit replaced former CEO Raghu Rau, who led the company for the past three years. Samit has also joined SeaChange’s board of directors, which voted unanimously in favor of hiring him as CEO.

Turner channels removed from Dish amid pact spat

Channels such as Cartoon Network and CNN are no longer part of Dish's programming lineup as a deadline has passed for the satellite TV provider and Turner Broadcasting to renew their distribution agreement. Dish Network Corp. said Tuesday that Turner refused to extend the overall deal. But Turner— a division of Time Warner Inc. — said in a statement that it has worked for months to come up with a fair agreement.

Bright House Networks Enterprise Solutions has reeled in a deal to provide its Metro Ethernet-based services to one of Orlando’s largest hospitality groups. Bright House Networks will provide Rosen Hotels & Resorts Metro Ethernet connectivity between its three convention hotels and its four leisure hotels, as well as dedicated Internet access (DIA) and HD video services.

Rentrak scores STB status measurement patent

Rentrak announced this morning that it has been granted a patent by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office for the method and system behind measuring the status of set-top boxes. U.S. Patent number 8,863,166 was designed to identify when TV sets are off, but the set-top-box is on.

Apple Pay makes debut with today's iOS 8.1 release
