3Com halts cable/DSL modem line; revises Q4 look

The company said in a statement that, "There is an industry-wide glut of consumer cable and DSL modems that has driven down prices and margins." As a result, 3Com is discontinuing its consumer cable and DSL modem product lines and refocusing on more profitable markets.
Philips/BarcoNet tout CA interoperability

Philips' CryptoWorks CA system was tested on BarcoNet's Krypton DVB Simulcrypt-compliant transport stream scrambler.
Juniper cuts up to 9% of workforce; revises Q2

It also will lay off 8 percent to 9 percent of its workforce and take a one-time charge of up to $45 million. Juniper now expects revenue in the $200 million to $210 million range, down from the previously expected $300 million to $330 million.
S-A to release ITV platform; taps ScreamingMedia

The first content will be provided by ScreamingMedia. The product is intended to provide a 24-hour, on-demand channel for interactive access to news, information and entertainment, S-A reports.
Broadcom lowers Q2 expectations; starts changes
June 6, 2001 8:00 pm | by Anne Kerven | CommentsBroadcom Corp. lowered its expectations for its second-quarter revenue by 32 percent to 35 percent from the first quarter, the company reported in an update. The company reported first-quarter net losses of $356.9 million, from net income of $38.6 million a year prior. Broadcom said last April it would review its business units and make reductions in some and invest in others.
Thomson makes a play for Alcatel's DSL unit

In the stock transaction, Thomson will buy the unit in exchange for 9.5 million new shares at $40.68 a share, or 48 euros per share. The deal will give Alcatel a 9.1 percent stake in Thomson. Traffic 'burstiness' doesn't reach Internet core

A team of Bell Labs researchers say that the extreme swings in traffic at edges of the Internet smooth out at the core, and "point the way to more efficient system and network designs with better performance at lower cost," Bell reports.
BB Gateways/Navini team on wireless local loops

The result is intended to be a consumer- self-installable, wireless broadband, residential gateway solution, Broadband Gateway says. CableLabs makes key appointments

Former broadband exec jumps to Qwest

Werner will oversee strategic technology planning and development for the 14 states where Qwest provides service, as well as other Qwest markets. Werner was CTO at AT&T Broadband and at TCI, its predecessor.

Lucent affirms Q3 guidance

Schacht reaffirmed the company's financial guidance in a meeting with financial analysts. "Our turnaround plan envisions quarter-to-quarter progress, and we continue on that path," he says.
