Exfo has introduced a network monitoring platform based on a distributed polling system the company said is able to monitor millions of network elements in real time.

The trends toward cloud computing and network virtualization have expanded the scale and complexity of the network beyond what legacy monitoring solutions can handle, Exfo said.

Exfo Xtract runs on commodity hardware, and is designed to be a comprehensive monitoring platform that can collect, analyze, correlate and report on real-time, historical, and even predict events in the network, the company claimed.

This is accomplished through proactive monitoring and management of network assets, regardless of infrastructure size, geographical deployment distribution, or network topology architecture.

Engineers at network operations centers (NOCs) are familiar with the problem of having to figure out how to set monitoring systems so that they catch critical events without setting off constant alarms for non-critical issues.

Exfp said its Xtract system has an integrated fault solution that comes with known network events and their corresponding sets of intelligent rules for alarm filtering, deduplication and reduction. In addition to the existing rules, the company said. It also provides a mechanism capable of modifying its knowledge rules based on the operator's current or ongoing experiences.

Equipped with a large number of preloaded management information bases (MIBs) containing key performance indicators (KPIs), Exfo Xtract provides rapid time to value by bypassing lengthy installation and configuration processes. In many cases, the solution can be deployed and operational within a single day for immediate value to operators, the company said.

"Exfo Xtract is leveraged in proactive scenarios to identify trends and impending problems related to the service infrastructure, thus enabling operators to take action before service outages occur for better operational efficiency," said Claudio Mazzuca, vice president of Exfo’s Transport and Service Assurance Division. "EXFO's carrier-grade solution uses the combination of its patented adaptive polling and scalable-down-to-a-second data extraction to pinpoint network problems in real time."
