SCTE, CableLabs team up on wireless, 3.1 symposium
Prior to the start of this fall’s SCTE Cable-Tec Expo, the SCTE and CableLabs will cue up wireless and DOCSIS 3.1 in a symposium designed to provide the current status of the two technologies and their impact on cable operators’ services.
The symposium will also tackle the technical requirements and engineering techniques that are needed to ensure seamless, successful deployments of DOCSIS 3.1 and wireless technologies.
While full-scale DOCSIS 3.1 implementations may not occur for another two years, cable operators are currently preparing their networks. At The Cable Show earlier this year, the cable industry announced that the consumer-facing name of DOCSIS 3.1 was Gigasphere.
“The flexibility and power of Wi-Fi and DOCSIS 3.1 are enabling cable operators to drive new levels of service innovation,” said Ralph Brown, CTO of CableLabs and a member the SCTE’s board of directors. “By partnering with SCTE, we can ensure that symposium attendees have access to the most advanced thinking on both technologies, including potential applications and deployment requirements.”
The symposium will feature four sessions each on wireless and DOCSIS 3.1. Morning sessions will address carrier grade Wi-Fi; Wi-Fi analytics, cloud and radio resource management; community Wi-Fi; and Wi-Fi antenna design and surveying.
The four afternoon DOCSIS 3.1 sessions will include: current status and schedule; bandwidth opportunities; DOCSIS 3.1 profiles—customizing bandwidth; and operational integration and proactive network maintenance.
Speakers for the symposium will be announced in the near future.
CableLabs and SCTE collaborated on a DOCSIS 3.1 symposium ahead of last year’s Cable-Tec Expo in Atlanta. Shortly after last year’s Expo, CableLabs published its first round of specifications for DOCSIS 3.1.
SCTE Cable-Tec Expo 2014 in will take place Sept. 22-25 in Denver.
