Driven by growth in software for home media gateways client-side TV software is projected to top $800 million by 2017.

The report by SNL Kagan said that the significant growth projected for home media gateways would be driven by increased demand in North America and Western Europe, which will account for the majority of shipments between last year and 2017. Asia-Pacific and Latin America will also drive accelerated growth in the latter years of the forecast.

“While total client-side set-top boxes will grow by about 5 percent through 2017, home media gateways (also known as IP gateways or home media servers) will more than double, providing significant opportunity for software vendors,” said Norm Bogen, research director at SNL Kagan MRG.

Client-side software vendors will see diminishing growth rates for total set-top boxes, as this market is expected to peak next year and then remain fairly static the following two years.
