Cablevision dials in new HD phone service
Among cable operators’ triple play services, voice offerings are somewhat taken for granted these days as consumers migrate to cell-phone only use, but there are still landline innovation opportunities to be had. A case in point is Cablevision’s new HD phone service, which is available for free to its Optimum Voce subscribers.
Cablevision said that its Optimum Voice network was the first landline service to launch HD calling in the United States. The HD phone service features higher voice quality than standard phone service, but for now both sides of a call need to have a phone that supports HD calling and, initially, both must be on Optimum Voice’s HD network.
Cablevision said it would interoperate with additional launched HD services to provide customers with a wider HD calling network.
Cablevision’s HD phone service is currently available in some areas of its footprint, and will continue to roll out in phases across the entire footprint over the next two months.
“With HD calling, Optimum customers have access to the best available voice quality, allowing them to enjoy richer, fuller audio when on the phone,” said Kevin Packingham, Cablevision’s executive vice president of product management, who came over to Cablevision from Samsung in May. “Similar to the advancement from standard to high definition for television, HD calling is a remarkable innovation to our voice services, and we believe customers will be thrilled by the call quality that they will experience with this network upgrade.”
