Videotron offers new 802.11ac router to subscribers
Videotron is serving up a new Wi-Fi router that supports 802.11ac and 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz wireless networks simultaneously.
The router was developed exclusively for Videotron in partnership with ZyXEL. Videotron said that supporting 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz wireless networks limited interference and lag. As an example, Videotron said it allows a user to multitask by playing a game online while watching an HD film or multimedia content on the Web at the same time.
The ZyXEL Wi-Fi router, which features greater range and increased speeds over previous generations of routers, is available for $99.95 retail. Videotron customers can also lease it for $4.99 per month.
The Wi-Fi router comes equipped with Qualcomm’s “Streamboost”technology, which helps users manage their Wi-Fi networks Among other features, Streamboost displays a list of connected devices along with usage and bandwidth monitoring information.
As for the installation, Videotron said it sends a specially trained tech to customers’ premises to optimize their Wi-Fi setups in order to reach every room of a home or business.
Cablevision has also launched 802.11ac routers. Last year Comcast debuted a dual-band 802.11n wireless router from Cisco that also operates in the 2.4 GHz and 5.0 GHz radio frequencies.
