Midcontinent Communications is now able to move forward with its plan of offering services in Fargo, N.D. now that a franchise agreement with the city commission has been reached.

Earlier this week, the city commission voted in favor of the 15-year franchise agreement, which allowed Midcontinent to start on its $55 million expansion into Fargo, according to a story by Prairie Business.

While Midcontinent already has a presence in North Dakota, the foray into Fargo will pit it against Cable One. Midcontinent announced in November that it would start construction this spring in Fargo ahead of connecting the first customers this fall.

Midcontinent Communications already provides services to Moorhead, Minn. and West Fargo, along with some businesses in Fargo. Midcontinent's network connects directly to major network hubs in Minneapolis, Fargo, and Sioux Falls, S.D.

Midcontinent has said the network would be a combination of fiber-to-the-premise and fiber-deep technologies with the flexibility to provide customers with data speeds ranging from 5 Mbps to 10 Gbps. Midcontinent plans on connecting businesses and customers over the next four years as the build out progresses.

North Dakota’s economy has been booming as the natural gas industry taps into the Bakken Formation. Two years ago, Midcontinent extended its Northern Plains Network from Minot to Williston.

Midcontinent serves more than 275,000 residential and business customers in North and South Dakota, Minnesota, and Wisconsin with its triple play offerings.
