Dish 2013: flat, as far as the eye can see
Over the course of 2013, Dish Network increased its subscriber base by 1,000, and reported annual revenue increased 5.5 percent from 2012 to $13.9 billion.
Net income attributable to Dish Network in 2013 increased 26.8 percent to $807 million from $637 million in 2012.
During the year, Dish activated approximately 2.666 million gross new pay-TV subscribers compared to approximately 2.739 million in 2012. The company ended 2013 with approximately 14.057 million TV subscribers, compared with approximately 14.056 million at the end of 2012.
The revenue increase was due in part to an increase of more than $3 in average monthly revenue per user. ARPU rose to $80.37 during 2013, up from $76.98 in 2012. The increases in ARPU were attributable in part to a price increase, and have been flattening out on a sequential basis.
Dish said it added approximately 253,000 net broadband subscribers in 2013, bringing its total broadband subscriber base to approximately 436,000 compared to approximately 183,000 at the close of 2012.
Dish yesterday agreed to transfer its ownership of five communications satellites to parent EchoStar, along with approximately $11 million in cash, all in exchange for shares of two series of preferred tracking stock. Dish will lease back some capacity on those five satellites. Dish said the maneuver should help its broadband business.
So – overall flatness, during a year in which the company’s spectrum holdings increased in value, sparking rampant speculation that the company might be an acquisition target for AT&T.
During the year, the company closed the last of its Blockbuster retail stores and by-mail DVD service. Dish said it has recast its financial statements and certain operational metrics to present Blockbuster as discontinued operations for all periods presented.
