Japan MSO improves OTT delivery with Qwilt
Cable Television Toyama, a cable network operator in Japan, is claiming it has improved caching efficiency for over the top (OTT) video by nearly 50 percent, with a 2x improvement in quality of experience (QoE) for its subscribers, using technology from Qwilt.
Cable Television Toyama is using Qwilt’s QB-Series Video Fabric Controller for real-time monitoring of video traffic across its networks. The system identifies trending and popular titles, and then stores them locally at the subscriber edge, in close proximity to end users.
This set-up is designed to eliminate the need for duplication of content streams from origin sites or content delivery networks (CDNs), speeding up time to delivery and reducing network strain and congestion, especially during peak viewing times.
Qwilt’s Video Fabric Controller handles not only video from OTT services, but also video from other popular sources such as YouTube and Dailymotion, as well as data, such as software updates. An example includes the recent iOS7 update from Apple.
