Start-up hawks Aereo alternative on Indiegogo

So if Aereo turns out to be illegal, there'll be Nuvyyo.

Nuvyyo is developing a tablet-and-DVR combo that will record free over-the-air (OTA) HDTV for replay at any time.

The new product, called Tablo, will include a tablet-based app to browse, record and stream broadcast TV content to any device, anytime, anywhere.

Indiegogo campaign to attract beta testers prior to the product's retail availability, which the company said will be sometime early in 2014. At least one version of the Tablo will be a 4-tuner model.

The Tablo app works on iPad and Android tablets, with playback and live TV available for iPhone and Android smartphones, PCs and Macs, and on TV screens via Apple TV, Roku, or Google Chromecast.

"We are transforming today's home media experience by delivering a better way to enjoy network and local programming in gorgeous HD, anywhere you happen to be," said Grant Hall, CEO of Nuvyyo. "For TV lovers, Tablo takes away the fear of 'cord-cutting' by perfecting the user experience with our tablet app and delivering the DVR functionality everyone knows and loves."

Nuvyyo cannot avoid comparison to Aereo. Aereo sets up an array of antennas to pull in OTA signals. It assigns one antenna to each subscriber, and records one copy of each requested show per subscriber, in a manner like the legal network DVR approach. Broadcasters continue to argue that the analogy does not hold, but Aereo seems to be prevailing on that issue. Broadcasters also argue that they have retransmission rights that Aereo is not paying for, and that has yet to be resolved.

Nuvyyo appears to be avoiding both of those issues altogether.

Nuvyyo's Indiegogo project is soliciting beta testers in key geographic markets. Pledges raised during the Indiegogo project will be used to fund initial production runs of the hardware so that the $4 million in venture backing Nuvyyo received earlier this year from Celtic House Venture Partners, can be earmarked for sales and marketing support of the general product launch in the U.S. and Canadian markets. The company is looking to raise a total of $50,000 through Indiegogo; as of today (November 8) it has collected $154.
