Attendance at this week’s SCTE Cable-Tec Expo in Atlanta was somewhere in the neighborhood of 9,800, which was a 6 percent increase over last year’s event that was held in Orlando.

Attendance at the flagship event by the Society of Cable Telecommunications Engineers was boosted by the “DOCSIS 3.1 engineering” and “Creating the cable generalist” pre-conference symposiums. Together the two Monday events drew more than 400 registrants.

Approximately 9,200 attendees were on hand last year at Expo compared with more than 10,000 two years ago in Atlanta. This year’s edition of Expo attracted more than 1,200 international attendees and more than 60 first-time exhibitors.

The SCTE Cable-Tec Expo2013 opening session featured the following: a keynote conversation between NCTA President and CEO Michael Powell and Kevin Hart, executive vice president and CTO of Cox Communications; a C-Suite panel with Cox President Pat Esser, Comcast Executive Vice President and COO Dave Watson, and Arris Chairman and CEO Bob Stanzione; and a network operations panel moderated by Comcast Executive Vice President and Chief Network Officer John Schanz.

“Wherever I went this year, there was enthusiasm about how SCTE Cable-Tec Expo is breaking new ground in issues that are essential to the future of cable,” said Mark Dzuban, president and CEO of SCTE. “I’m pleased at how the industry responded to this event and am particularly grateful to Michael Powell; to Pat Esser, Kevin Hart and their teams at Cox Communications for their overwhelming support; and to CableLabsfor their work in creating our standing-room-only DOCSIS 3.1 symposium.”

SCTE Cable-Tec Expo will land in Denver next year Sept. 23-26 at the Colorado Convention Center in Denver. Tony Werner, executive vice president and CTO of Comcast Cable, will serve as program committee chairman for the 2014 event. The last time Expo was in the Mile High City was 2009. Attendance was down that year partially due to more than a foot of snow in the Denver area.

The IBC Show in Amsterdam is scheduled for Sept. 12-16 of next year.
