Cox Communications’ subscribers can now tap into other MSOs’ Wi-Fi hotspots in some of the major cities across the nation, including Washington D.C., Boston, San Francisco and Philadelphia.

Along with Comcast, Time Warner Cable, Cablevision and Bright House Networks, Cox signed up for the roaming agreement that that enabled the cable operators to use each other’s hotspots, which was announced at The Cable Show last year.

To start with, Cox customers can look for the CableWiFi SSID when they are in Comcast, Cablevision and Bright House Networks systems. Time Warner Cable hotspots will be added into the mix in the fourth quarter of this year.

Once Cox users have logged into a CableWiFi hotspot with their user names and passwords, their wireless device will automatically recognize and logon to other CableWiFi hotspots for 180 days.

The out-of-footprint hotspots are available for use on Cox’s Preferred, Premier and Ultimate tiers for no additional charge.

Earlier this year, Cox turned up 1,500 hotspots in its Virginia and Connecticut markets, but the  Cable WiFi roaming hotspots are available to all of Cox’s subscribers that have the correct data plans in place.

At this year’s Cable Show, the CableWiFi Alliance announced it had topped 150,000 access points across the nation, which made it the largest Wi-Fi network in the nation.

“Cox recognizes that our customers want quick access to information and entertainment anytime, anywhere. That's why we are committed to delivering a fast, reliable connection to the Internet when and where our customers need it," said Len Barlik, executive vice president and chief product officer. "Not only are we providing our customers access to nearly 150,000 Wi-Fi hotspots throughout the country, we are also making it convenient and simple for customers to locate and logon to these hotspots."

In June, Cox Business announced it would launch its Hospitality WiFi service across the company’s footprint this year.
