AT&T gives wings to Delta’s in air point-of-sales

AT&T has signed a multi-year agreement with Delta Air Lines to enable better in-flight mobile point-of-sale transactions by flight attendants.

The new platform allows flight attendants to sell food, goods, and upgrade seats while onboard Delta flights. AT&T will equip Delta’s 19,000 flight attendants with Nokia Lumia 820 devices powered by Microsoft Dynamics mobile point-of-sale platform on Windows Phone 8, with a Delta-specific customer experience developed by Avanade to operate over Wi-Fi and AT&T’s 4G LTE network.

Avanade will provide Delta with ongoing support, maintenance, and application enhancements for the next three years. 

The platform allows for near real-time credit card validation on food and beverage purchases, as well as upgrades to Economy Comfort seating in-flight. On-board Economy Comfort upgrades will start on transcontinental and international flights before being offered on flights across Delta’s system.

There are also operational and workflow efficiencies associated with unifying all of the flight attendants on the same devices. AT&T said the new platform would shave transaction times by 10 percent, which in turn will allow flight attendants to conduct more transactions and better attend to passengers’ needs.

Over the next three years, Delta Air Lines crews will also have access to the newest Nokia devices.
