RGB powers Sweetwater Cable TV’s all-digital conversion
RGB Networks announced that its products were used by Sweetwater Cable TV to upgrade its network to all-digital in order to deliver more services to subscribers.
Sweetwater has served the residents of Wyoming’s Rock Springs and Green River communities since its founding in 1955 when it initially offered just three broadcast channels out of Salt Lake City.
The company has steadily expanded its service offerings and now offers its residential and business customers a comprehensive suite of broadband video, data and voice services, including more than 240 channels of programming.
The all-digital upgrade enabled Sweetwater to reclaim bandwidth that was previously allocated to its analog video service, but is now used to deliver new digital services, including HD broadcasts of all local channels offered at no additional cost.
Another benefit of the digital conversion project included new revenue from inserting ads for local advertisers. Sweetwater has also saved money and streamlined its operations by getting its programming feeds directly from the programmers themselves, rather than through the single source it has traditionally relied on.
“We had big goals for this major network upgrade and it was clear to us from the start that RGB Networks had the most proven products to help us achieve these goals,” said Brian Jackson, chief engineer for Sweetwater Cable TV. “Installing and configuring the RGB products went smoothly and the technical support has been great. We’ve been particularly impressed with the stability of the products and with the outstanding picture quality.”
To accomplish the upgrade, Sweetwater turned to RGB Networks and deployed several RGB products in its central headend in Rock Springs. The RGB products included its Broadcast Network Processor (BNP) for statistical multiplexing, transrating, grooming and ad splicing, and the Modular Media Converter (MMC) for ASI-to-Gigabit Ethernet conversion.
