Mexico’s Megacable has had exploratory conversations with Time Warner Cable in regard to a phone offering that would serve Time Warner Cable’s Hispanic customers in the United States.

Reuters reported yesterday that the talks have taken place, and Megacable chief executive Enrique Yamuni said the conversations to date have centered around a strategic alliance that could allow Time Warner Cable subscribers to receive phone calls from Megacable customers without incurring long-distance charges.

Time Warner Cable spokesman Justin Venech stressed that the talks were in the very early stages, and that any sort of alliance on a voice service was not imminent.

“We have had conversations with Megacable, but they were exploratory,” Venech wrote in an e-mail to CED. “We have nothing to say regarding Megacable beyond that. We have a lot of customers who are international callers, in particular with friends and family in Mexico, and we are constantly looking to help keep them connected in ways that are convenient and cost-effective.”

In last month’s second-quarter earnings report, Time Warner Cable added 45,000 voice subscribers, which was a 40 percent jump from last year's second quarter.
