Comcast trials tech tracker

There are probably few things more annoying than being held hostage over a four-hour window for a cable installer to arrive at a customer’s home. Comcast has winnowed down that window to around two hours, but now its trialing a new real-time solution that it hopes will alleviate subscribers’ frustrations.

Lightpath ups Flynn to SVP of sales

Lightpath, the commercial services division of Cablevision, has promoted Joseph Flynn to the position of senior vice president of sales. In his new role, Flynn is tasked with overseeing Lightpath’s sales operation, which includes day-to-day leadership and management of all its sales functions.

Aereo files for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection

Online streaming service Aereo says that it has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection, saying an unfavorable ruling by the U.S. Supreme Court was too difficult to overcome. In June, the Supreme Court ruled that Aereo operates like a cable TV company. As a result, the court said the service violates copyright law unless Aereo pays broadcasters licensing fees for offering TV station programs to customers' devices.

Even casual viewers of online video will appreciate the ability to watch it on a big-screen TV. For about $100, you can get a great streaming TV device to do that. Or for about a third of that, you can get a pretty good one. Content selection varies, but all offer such basics as Netflix, Hulu and YouTube. Mobile still a struggle for Intel; PC doing better

Chip-making giant Intel Corp. is still struggling to catch up in mobile computing but says its personal computer business is performing better than expected and its return to revenue growth this year will continue into 2015. Intel's business has suffered as consumers have increasingly turned to smartphones and tablets that mostly use lower-power chips made by other companies.

Comcast has hired Devesh Raj as its senior vice president of strategic and financial planning. In his new job, Raj will help drive the overall growth strategy at both Comcast and NBCUniversal, which includes leading the identification and pursuit of strategic business opportunities, partnerships, alliances, and licensing agreements.

Cogeco to expand flagship data center

Cogeco Data Services is beefing up its flagship data center in Barrie, Ontario by adding more than 20,000-square-feet of operational space. Cogeco said the expansion project at the data center was underway and it will be wrapped up early next year.

Xfinity Home for X1 puts app on the TV screen

The app allows Comcast customers to do the same things with their remote controls that they’ve previously been able to do only on their iOS and Android mobile devices: manage and monitor their home systems, including controlling includes security sensors, video cameras, lighting fixtures, and thermostats.

Hundreds bid to host FCC's rural 100 Mbps broadband experiment

The FCC set aside $100 million for the project. More than 180 entities proposed 600 projects worth $885 million suggesting even before the experiment is conducted there is widespread demand for far more than the minimum level of broadband service many think is adequate for rural markets.

Mediacom Business: We got gigabit too

Cable operators have been quick to point out that they’ve been offering gigabit services on the business services side for sometime now. Such is the case with Mediacom Business, which first started offering fiber-based gigabit services back in 2007 before renaming the platform “Gigabit+ Fiber Solutions” in the summer of 2013.

Former Arris exec Elder takes helm at Concurrent

Concurrent announced that Derek Elder will take over as the company’s CEO on Friday, replacing Dan Mondor. Elder, a former Arris executive, will also join Concurrent’s board of directors. Mondor had served as Concurrent’s CEO since April 2008.

TWC rings up unlimited calls to China, Hong Kong

Time Warner Cable has expanded the reach of its Unlimited Home Phone calling plan to include unlimited free calls to China and Hong Kong. With the expansion, calls to China and Hong Kong are now treated the same as long-distance calls anywhere in the U.S., as well as Canada, Puerto Rico, Guam, the U.S. Virgin Islands and Mexico, which was added to the plan earlier this year.

ZigBee 3.0 aims to standardize ZigBee standards

The Internet of Things promises universal interconnectivity. There are multiple ZigBee profiles optimized for different applications, however. So that different groups of products no longer operate in silos, the ZigBee Alliance plans to unify most ZigBee profiles under a common standard: ZigBee 3.0.

Netflix heads down under

Netflix says it plans to expand into Australia and New Zealand in March. The online movie and television provider said Tuesday that details on pricing will be available later. In the most recent quarter, subscriber growth fell short of company forecasts because of a price increase in the U.S., and Netflix is dealing with tougher competition from Amazon and Hulu.

Atlantic Broadband makes video available from any PC

Atlantic Broadband has launched an online portal that gives customers direct access to content on any personal computer. Atlantic Broadband customers can log in with their user names and passwords, anywhere in the U.S. where they have an Internet connection.

NYC to convert phone booths into muni Wi-Fi network

The city issued an RFP for the project, called LinkNYC, earlier this year, and today awarded the contract for the work to CityBridge, a team of companies comprised of Qualcomm, Titan, Control Group, and Comark. Titan is an ad company that currently operates most of the city’s pay phones.
