The HomePlug Powerline Alliance, an industry group working to specify home networking gear that operates over traditional residential electrical wiring, announced the certification of a chipset from one of its member companies. The latest chipset to be certified under the HomePlug 1.0 specification established last year is from Canadian chipmaker Cogency Semiconductor.

Motorola keeps busy at ANGA confab

European survey shows iTV interest

The European market for interactive television services shows a lot of promise, and a new survey results from interactive software provider Canal+ Technologies bears this out. Following in the footsteps of a close on-demand technology rival, nCUBE Corp. on Tuesday inked a deal with Everstream to create an interactive advertising platform for cable and satellite operators. Under the deal, nCUBE will integrate its nABLE On-Demand Management System with Everstream's proprietary advertising software.

Earthlink Grows Broadband Base

Despite missing Wall Street's first-quarter estimates, EarthLink Inc. says its broadband subscriber base grew 13 percent during the fourth quarter 2001. Although EarthLink's first-quarter revenue increased 13 percent to $333.4 million compared to numbers posted in the first quarter 2001, the number fell short of Wall Street's expectations.

Arris to sell TollBridge gateways

After participating in a recently sewn up IP telephony trial in Detroit with Comcast Corp., Arris and TollBridge Technologies have formalized their relationship under a new re-seller deal. Specifically, Arris will flesh out its CompleteVoice cable telephony suite with TollBridge's TB300 gateway, and sell the equipment to cable operators worldwide.

FCC delays EchoStar-Hughes review

Federal regulators have been reviewing the proposed EchoStar-Hughes Electronics merger with a fine-toothed comb, but the FCC is putting on the brakes until further public comment on the deal. In February the companies said they plan to launch a spot-beam satellite to enable the delivery of local channels in all 210 markets the combined company would serve.

Digital satellite TV provider EchoStar Communications Corp. and national ISP EarthLink announced a marketing alliance to offer consumers combined Dish Network satellite TV and EarthLink DSL services. Through Dish Network retailers, the two will be offering a competitive bundle to consumers who take the two services, offering monthly credits of up to $10.

Vulcan Machines touts hard-wired Java chip for set-tops

Following an aggressive foray into cable telephony, Cox Communications Inc. plans to do much of the same with video-on-demand, and leverage the service to obtain and retain digital customers.
