Michael PohlCable industry veteran Michael Pohl has been named as BlackArrow’s new chairman of its board of directors.

Pohl, who joined advanced advertising vendor BlackArrow’s board last year, replaced Larry Kramer as chairman after Kramer was recently appointed as president and publisher of USA Today. Kramer retained a seat on BlackArrow’s board.

“Michael Pohl has been a leading figure in the pay-TV community for over 25 years,” Kramer said. “His knowledge of the industry and his experience in helping technology companies successfully navigate the pay-TV landscape are unique assets that will help BlackArrow continue to expand into new opportunities in the marketplace.”

Pohl is a past recipient of the NCTA’s Vanguard Award, and he currently serves on the board of directors of Ascent Media. Pohl was previously chairman of the board for BigBand Networks.

Pohl’s executive career includes stops as president of the Global Strategies Group at C-Cor, as chief executive officer at NCube ,and as interim vice president and general manager of the On Demand Systems Division at Arris following Arris’ purchase of C-Cor.

He is a member of the Cable TV Pioneers and has served on numerous industry committees with CableLabs, CTAM and the NCTA. Previously, he served as a board member of ACTV, subsequently acquired by OpenTV, and of whole-home networking software provider Ucentric Systems, which was bought by Motorola.

“Traditional pay-TV business models are threatened as consumers and advertisers demand access to live and time-shifted content across a variety of devices,” Pohl said. “BlackArrow’s proven success with major operators and its industry thought leadership position the company as a key partner for service providers as they define and develop next-generation TV advertising.”
