CMC’s Hits signs deal to distribute In Demand’s VOD movies

Cable operators will now be able to tap into video-on-demand movies from In Demand Networks, thanks to a deal between In Demand and the Comcast Media Center’s Hits platform.

The Comcast Media Center (CMC) is now offering movies through its new Hits On Demand Content Distribution Network, which lets cable operators access the cloud-based movies without building their own delivery and storage system or using an over-the-top solution.

With the partnership, third-party cable operators can offer viewers more long-tail content to further monetize their investments, as well as reduce customer churn by having more titles.

Financial terms of the deal weren’t disclosed. In collaboration with CMC, In Demand delivers VOD content for many network groups and channels, including AMC Networks, Fox, MLB Network, Scripps, TV Guide Network and other programmers.

“Making this content available via the Hits platform is a great benefit to independent cable operators by improving their competitive position and helping to generate incremental revenue,” said In Demand President and CEO Bob Benya.

The Hits On Demand Content Distribution Network uses centralized content hosting, edge caches and VOD servers to maximize local storage. The platform supports the legacy MPEG-2 set-top boxes, bringing on-demand content to subscribers’ homes without replacing or installing customer premises equipment in digital cable households.

“Working with In Demand allows Hits to offer thousands of additional on-demand titles to our cable affiliates,” said Leslie Russell, vice president and general manager of Hits. “Making this type of long-tail entertainment available through a cloud-based environment allows operators to fulfill the demand for deeper library content without buying or maintaining more storage locally. It is a natural fit for Hits, which continuously develops solutions designed to reduce upfront investment and maximize operator return.”
