CenturyLink added more than 89,000 high-speed Internet customers to end the first quarter of 2012 with 5.6 million subscribers.

The company also added 15,000 subscribers to its Prism TV service – available in only eight of its markets – according to a transcript of CenturyLink’s analyst call provided by Seeking Alpha. That was an increase of 20 percent.

The company said it curtailed its line losses, but those losses still overwhelmed any gains in broadband and TV subscribers, leading to lower overall revenue and a 5 percent slip in profit, from $211 million in the first quarter a year ago to $200 million in the first quarter of fiscal 2012 just completed.

Like many of its carrier peers, business services are becoming the main engine for growth. CEO Glen Post said business services now represent 60 percent of the company’s operating revenue.
