Shaw Communications launched its Shaw Exo brand this week, which was the end result of its network upgrades.

Shaw Exo features high-definition signals in a higher, less compressed bit rate for improved quality and a larger selection of on-demand titles in full 1080p HD, along with fiber-based Internet speeds of up to 250 Mbps.

The 1080p HD signals are currently available to Shaw Gateway customers. Shaw first rolled out Arris’ whole-home gateway in Calgary early last year before making it available across its entire footprint in October.

Shaw’s Wi-Fi service, which is currently in trials in Vancouver, Calgary and Edmonton, will also be a part of the Exo mix once the service is rolled out to more cities and communities in Western Canada over the coming year.

Shaw said its newly redesigned Exo on-demand library and website has more than 7,000 titles, with more than 1,200 available in HD. Some of the content is available via streaming to computers and laptops.

Shaw is also offering the top 20 TV shows from Global, CTV and Citytv on-demand, which means subscribers won’t have to use their DVRs to record the shows. Shaw’s on-demand website features a new interface, while a new guide interface will be available later this year.

“Shaw Exo is a promise that we will continue to innovate, lead, and provide the latest in technology and entertainment offerings to customers,” said Peter Bissonnette, president of Shaw Communications. “With Shaw Exo, the power of our network allows us to continue delivering the products and services that our customers are looking for.”

Shaw credited its analog-to-digital conversion as the enabling force behind the launch of Exo, but Shaw has also been working behind the scenes over the past few years on getting its fiber-optic network ready with trials of RFoG and fiber-to-the-home (FTTH).

Shaw Cable customers who are in areas that haven’t seen the all-digital conversion project will still receive some of the benefits of Exo via the company’s online Web portal.

Shaw Exo is currently available to Shaw Cable customers only; Shaw Direct satellite customers will have the Exo features at a later date. Shaw Exo hardware and packaging are available across various bundles.
