Charter Business is getting ready to join the ranks of cable operators that are offering Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) trunking to medium-size and large businesses.

Charter Business will launch its SIP trunking-based voice service in Wisconsin and Missouri this year, followed by a national rollout across its footprint next year.

"Charter Business SIP trunking will enable customers with an IP-PBX to take maximum advantage of their IP capabilities by converging data and voice over the same access connection," said Jim McGann, senior vice president of Charter Business. "Our SIP trunking solution simplifies configuration; reduces equipment costs; and makes moves, additions or modifications simple. Charter Business now offers a range of voice solutions for business customers of all sizes, from phone for small offices to PRI and SIP trunking for more complex voice needs."

Some of the advantages of SIP trunking include reducing the total cost of ownership with fewer trunks that are priced less per call, as well as scalability to meet growing business demands. Charter's SIP trunking also includes disaster recovery options, such as re-routing calls during service disruption and around-the-clock monitoring.

Cox Communications, Comcast and Cablevision also offer SIP trunking services to business customers.
