The Broadband Premises Installation and Service GuidebookThe SCTE is printing a new manual with up-to-the-minute material for engineers looking to gain certification as cable installers and technicians. The Society is also planning an online training program, the first course of which will be based on the forthcoming manual.

The Broadband Premises Installation and Service Guidebook includes the fundamentals that installers and technicians require to master the SCTE Broadband Premises Installer (BPI) and Broadband Premises Technician (BPT) certification examinations.

The guide covers: technology, systems and requirements; customer service; planning; aerial and underground installations; bonding and grounding; cable entry to the premises; terminal devices; connecting customer equipment; test equipment; troubleshooting and repairs; reducing signal impairments; and safe work practices.

Available initially for self-study programs, the manual is expected to be the cornerstone of an SCTE e-learning course that will be announced in the near future, the organization said.

"As cable's role in the communications landscape has grown, so has the need to ensure zero-defect installations for customers," said Daniel Howard, senior vice president of engineering and CTO of the SCTE. "Working closely with representatives of the cable system operator community, SCTE's Broadband Premises Installation and Service Guidebook and subsequent e-learning course will increase the technical knowledge and best-practices skills that today's broadband professionals require."

The SCTE is now taking orders for the Broadband Premises Installation and Service Guidebook on its website. Prices start at $119 for SCTE members and $149 for non-members. Volume discounts are available.
