Comcast is preparing wider commercialization of its home gateway that combines an embedded multimedia terminal adapter (EMTA), a cable modem and a Wi-Fi router.
The introduction also marks the official expansion of Comcast's Xfinity Service Support, first test marketed last spring.
Now called the Xfinity Wireless Gateway, this is the product that Comcast used to refer to as Dory. Comcast began test marketing Dory last summer.
The gateway, as originally described, includes a two-line EMTA with an integrated router, a DOCSIS 3.0 cable modem and a 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi access point, which can connect 802.11 b, g and n clients simultaneously. The Dory gateway also has four Gigabit Ethernet RJ45 ports and is designed to meet PacketCable 1.5 and 2.0 specifications, as well as DOCSIS 3.0 specs. Versions were manufactured by both Arris and SMC Networks.
The gateway will only be available to new subscribers to Comcast's most expensive tiers. That includes Blast, Extreme 50 and Extreme 105 Xfinity Internet customers at no additional charge beyond the standard equipment rental fee ($7 per month).
Although the gateway is "fully supported," according to a blog post signed by Rob Slinkard, Comcast's vice president of product management for Xfinity Internet and voice services, subscribers can choose to also subscribe to Xfinity Signature Support to cover "any aspect of their connected home – from networking, to virus removal, to software and hardware troubleshooting."
