CableLabs is using S3 Group's StormTest Development Center for automated testing of interactive TV applications.

CableLabs has integrated StormTest Development Center to interface with its ETV Activity Reporting System (EARS), which monitors enhanced TV (ETV) streams at the operator headend. By connecting StormTest Development Center to EARS, Enhanced Binary Interchange Format (EBIF) applications can be tested quickly to ensure a quality user experience.

With EBIF-enabled applications in set-top boxes starting to gain traction with cable operators, S3 Group's offering enables quick and efficient testing of the new apps.

The solution allows for automated testing to be carried out more efficiently and effectively by testing multiple devices with different test scripts simultaneously for interactive applications, embedded firmware and digital TV solutions. It provides organizations like CableLabs with enterprise features such as centralized resource management, where testing slots can be pooled across systems and sites, as well as centralized reporting and results management – all extremely important when testing multiple interactive applications.

S3 Group has also installed a StormTest evaluation system at CableLabs in order to help automate user agent test cases.

StormTest Development Center has been chosen by more than 25 digital TV operators, broadcasters and vendors, including Canoe Ventures, Mediaset and Irdeto, among others.

"CableLabs sets the benchmark for cable specifications in North America, and to have them make use of our StormTest family for automated testing of EBIF applications is a true testament to the value of this technology," said Ian Harris, director of product marketing at S3 Group. "Around the world, operators are in serious need of finding a proven, reliable solution to enable the delivery of interactive applications to any consumer device. StormTest Development Center is a high-quality solution to this challenge."
