Cox Communications has got its subscribers' backs with a new set of security, parental controls and online backup tools.

Cox, the nation's third-largest cable operator, is offering its high-speed residential Internet customers free downloads of Cox Security Suite Plus Powered by McAfee, McAfee Family Protection and Cox Secure Online Backup.

"In addition to award-winning speed and service, Cox offers robust features that provide exceptional value and convenience and help ensure a positive and safe online experience," said Philip Nutsugah, vice president of voice and data product management and development.

The new features are available in all Cox markets. Customers can activate each feature and establish custom settings via Cox's dedicated site or from the Internet Tools portal.

Cox Security Suite Plus Powered by McAfee gives subscribers added online protection via anti-virus, anti-spam, anti-spyware, anti-phishing, email and instant message security, and SiteAdvisor Plus website rating on up to five PCs or Macs.

In addition to blocking inappropriate content and sites, McAfee Family Protection software can be used to manage the amount of time children spend online and to filter online TV shows, movies, explicit lyrics in iTunes music and objectionable YouTube videos.

Cox's Secure Online Backup provides automatic backup online for subscribers' files and content. A virtual drive feature on the desktop allows easy drag and drop into the online vault, and files can be shared with friends and family according to custom access settings - anytime, anywhere.

Storage amount included is free and varies by tier:

  1. Starter and Essential – 1 GB
  2. Preferred – 5 GB
  3. Premier – 50 GB
  4. Ultimate – Unlimited.

Cox also educates parents, caregivers and teens about safe communication behaviors through its Take Charge! resources online and supporting programs nationwide.

Last year, Cox Business launched a national managed services suite - which included online backup and storage – after conducting trials in its New England footprint.

Comcast also offers a security suite for its residential data customers.
