Virgin Media used a line card from Cisco to crack the 1.5 Gbps barrier during a recent DOCSIS 3.0-based trial in east London, which is also a prime location for next year's 2012 Olympics Games.
Virgin dropped in Cisco's (3G60) Broadband Processing Engine, which is a line card for the vendor's flagship uBR10K universal broadband router and cable modem termination system (CMTS). In addition to reaching speeds of up to 1.5 Gbps on the downstream, Virgin Media achieved upload speeds of up to 150 Mbps in the trial.
When paired with its universal broadband router, Cisco said the 3G60 line card supports the full set of DOCSIS 3.0 features at scale, including IPv6, as well as support for advanced features such as dynamic bandwidth sharing. Cisco said that by using the 3G60, one of its routers could support up to 576 downstream and 480 upstream channels per chassis, which the company claimed was the highest CMTS capacity and density in the industry.

"We are proud to help Virgin Media achieve such significant milestones with its network capacity and broadband connection speeds."
In other Cisco-related news, today the company took the wraps off of a new set of routers that it said would help wireless carriers deploy mobile services to devices such as tablets, smartphones and connected appliances.
Cisco's ASR 9000 Series Aggregation Services Routers Systems include three platforms:
- Cisco ASR 901 cell site router for 2G, 3G and 4G mobile cell sites
- Cisco ASR 903, which is an Ethernet access router for mobile applications
- Cisco ASR 9001, which is a smaller version of the Cisco ASR 9000 Series edge router for smaller deployments.

Cisco said that more than 500 service providers worldwide have deployed the Cisco ASR 9000 Series products as part of their Internet network, including: Polish Telecom, PCCW, Comcast, Cox Communications, Charter Communications and Kabel Deutschland.
