The city council of Birmingham, Ala., recently approved a franchise that allows Charter Communications to offer its triple-play services in the area.

Birmingham's mayor also signed off on the agreement, which runs for more than a year, according to a Charter spokeswoman.

Charter has at least nine to 12 months of engineering work on the system before it starts offering its voice, video and data services. Charter will be competing with AT&T and Bright House Networks in the Birmingham area, but the Charter spokeswoman said the company has already spoken with Bright House and will keep it apprised.

Charter is doing business in the Birmingham area under the Marcus Cable moniker, which was the name of the cable operation that Charter purchased.
