Knology adds more HD in Huntsville, Ala.; preps for all-digital
As a prelude to embarking on the all-digital path, Knology has added 17 new HD channels to its Huntsville, Ala., lineup.
Huntsville marks the third HD channel upgrade this year by Knology in its 13 markets. Earlier this month, HD channels were added to Knoxville, Tenn., and Charleston, S.C., while Augusta, Ga., is slated to follow suit next month.
"We continuously strive to provide our customers with the advanced products and services they need to stay connected," says Tony Palermo, vice president of marketing for Knology. "The addition of 17 new HD channels will give our customers even more quality television viewing options."
High-definition channels added to Huntsville's lineup included Bravo, CNN, E!, ESPNU, Fox News, Golf Channel, NFL Channel, Oxygen, SyFy, The Travel Channel, USA and Versus, among many others.
Palermo said this morning that the HD upgrades were the result of cleared spectrum and "fine tuning" ahead of the company's plans to convert to all-digital. Knology will start deploying some digital terminal adapters (DTAs) this year before rolling them out more broadly next year.
"We're going to pick the markets that have been converted by a competitor," Palermo said of Knology's DTA deployment strategy. "Offering DTAs helps with customer retention."
Palermo said that Knology has been testing some HD DTAs. Over the past few years, the prices have dropped on DTAs, and the HD DTAs are also coming in at more affordable price points for cable operators.
Knology has also started offering more data tiers, including DOCSIS 3.0 speeds, to small- and medium-size businesses in some of its markets, as well as more DOCSIS 3.0-based tiers for residential subscribers.
