The SCTE announced the availability of a pair of online courses designed to increase the understanding of fundamental technical concepts of cable.

Both "Understanding Cable Technology" and "Fundamentals of IP Networking in Cable Networks" are eight-week courses designed to increase knowledge of the technological approaches that are driving current and future business opportunities for cable system operators.

The courses can be taken individually but are also integrated into the SCTE Professional Development (SCTE Pd) curriculum. That curriculum will be expanded to include classes on IPv6, the impact of going all-digital, home networking and other subjects in the months ahead.

Registration is available online.

"Cable's transformation to a full-fledged provider of telecommunications and entertainment services and the industry's migration to new service delivery platforms have created a need for greater technical understanding among all personnel," said Daniel Howard, CTO of SCTE. "The goal of 'Understanding Cable Technology' and 'Fundamentals of IP Networking in Cable Networks' is to provide the foundation needed to help MSO employees to make the informed decisions that can positively impact operators' bottom lines."

"Understanding Cable Technology" is designed to increase understanding of and involvement in the technical intricacies of cable networks for participants in such areas as finance, purchasing, marketing and customer service. The course includes historical and visionary looks at cable technology, as well as specific modules on: network architecture, analog and digital video, high-speed Internet, voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP), home networking and OSS/BSS back office systems.

"Fundamentals of IP Networking in Cable Networks" provides personnel with the practical application and problem solving needed as the industry moves toward IP infrastructures for video, voice and data. The course has been engineered specifically to provide technical and support personnel with the working knowledge of IPv4 that is critical to ensuring seamless migration to IPv6 for MSOs in the coming months.

In addition to the fundamental courses, the SCTE's "IPv6: Impact on Cable Networks" facilitated course begins April 4 and can be taken on-demand throughout the year. Courses on digital migration and home networking are scheduled within the next two months.
