In the media: Comcast in talks to shorten VOD release window
Comcast is reportedly in talks with Hollywood studios in regard to shrinking the window for some on-demand movies to six to eight weeks after their theatrical release.
Marcien Jenckes, Comcast's senior vice president and general manager of video services, said in an interview with Bloomberg that Comcast was looking to offer VOD rentals in a shorter timeframe than the current 90 to 120 days after a cinematic release.
Comcast, the nation's largest ISP and cable operator, hasn't said when it would roll out the premium VOD service, but it's first making sure the idea passes muster with the studios.
Jenckes told Bloomberg that Comcast hasn't figured out a price point for the premium VOD service, but it may experiment with different prices based on the movies and different regions around the country.
Comcast currently offers some independent films on the same day as their theatrical releases.
Last week, DirecTV bowed a premium VOD service that offers some movies for $29.99 60 days after their release dates.
