Comcast has successfully demonstrated the ability to support various CPE in a native, dual-stack environment (IPv4 and IPv6) using Arris' CMTS and cable modems.
The two ran the trial in Comcast's Denver-area systems. Native dual-stack is the recommended approach for supporting both IPv4 and IPv6, though also one of the more difficult to implement.
"Over the past year we've worked very closely with our customers to plan IPv6 feature support for both our C4 CMTS and our Touchstone CPE portfolio of cable modems and E-MTAs," said Todd Kessler, Arris' vice president of CMTS product management.
Commenting on the Denver systems' native dual-stack trials, John Jason Brzozowski, Comcast's distinguished engineer and chief IPv6 architect, noted: "We are pleased with the progress of our IPv6 deployment and trials to date. The performance of the products and the support we've received have been excellent, allowing us to offer a seamless native dual-stack experience to our trial users. As such, Comcast values Arris as a partner in cable-based IPv6 technology."
IPv6 is the next version of Internet Protocol. The transition from IPv4 to IPv6 is necessary because the world is running out of unassigned IPv4 addresses. The last block of free IPv4 addresses was assigned last month. IPv6 also offers substantial advantages when it comes to security and other features.
