Broadband stimulus award winner Southwest Minnesota Broadband Services (SMBS) will use Calix's Ethernet services platform and its optical network terminals (ONTs) to provide services to its customers.
SMBS will deploy the EXA-powered E7 Ethernet Service Access Platform (ESAP) and 700GE family of ONTs for a fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) service to eight rural communities across southwest Minnesota.
The service provider plans to be able to offer up to a full gigabit per second to customers, as well as voice and advanced cable television services.
SMBS was the recipient of a $12.7 million stimulus award, consisting of a $6.35 million grant and a $6.35 million loan, which includes plant engineering, materials, labor and other costs, including access equipment.
SMBS is a consortium of cities and will own the 125-mile fiber ring that will connect the communities and serve more than 7,300 residents.
