Cox Communications' subscribers can stay connected to their home DVRs and voicemails thanks to the launch of a new mobile app that works with Android, iPad and iPhone devices.

In order to use Cox Mobile Connect, which is available for downloading at the Apple App Store or Android Market, users have to subscribe to Cox's voice and video tiers.

Remote DVR management has almost become table stakes for cable operators and their competitors. Comcast's Xfinity TV app for iPads also enables remote DVR capabilities while Time Warner Cable said the same functionality would be added to its iPad app at a later date.

In November, Bright House Networks served up remote DVR programming to its customers that use iPhones, Android, Blackberry and other smart phones.

Cox said some subscribers in select markets without a smart phone could use its Remote Guide Access to program their DVRs from a browser on the Web or on any data capable mobile device by logging onto a Web portal. Cox said customers don't need to be a data subscriber to program via the Web, however, to need to have a Cox e-mail address to program via a mobile browser.

Cox Mobile Connect also allows subscribers to remotely view TV listings and home call logs, manage home phone call settings and get help with support issues.

Users can also receive information on weather alerts and school closings, as well as access Cox's Facebook page.

"Our customers are seeking more ways to access their Cox services," said Philip Nutsugah, Cox's vice president of product strategy and management. "Our new app, Cox Mobile Connect, gives our customers more ways to manage their Cox services when away from the home."
