Survey: Virgin Media fastest ISP in United Kingdom
Virgin Media is hands down the fastest ISP in the United Kingdom, according to a recent survey by Cable.co.uk.
According to the survey, Virgin Media provides customers with an average download speed of 7.8 Mbps – a full 4.4 Mbps faster than the nearest competitor.
Be Broadband, a subsidiary of O2, came in second, providing customers with average speeds of 5.8 Mbps. The next fastest providers were BT, Sky and Orange, respectively.
When it comes to Internet speeds, Virgin Media has an advantage with the amount of fiber-optic cable that it has in the ground. Virgin also provides ADSL service to customers who live outside of its high-speed network.
Virgin also has 50 Mbps and 100 Mbps offerings, and last month it upgraded its 20 Mbps tier to 30 Mbps.
In other Virgin Media-related news, Nominum announced today that Virgin Media had picked its NavAssist and Vantio NXR to aid in Internet navigation.
NavAssist is a consumer application that makes it easier for Internet users to navigate the Web, while Vantio NXR is a policy software module for Nominum's Vantio Intelligent DNS System. Virgin had previously deployed Nominum's caching DNS server technology, which it recently upgraded to the Vantio Intelligent DNS System.
