Aurora Networks sees the increasing need for bandwidth – whether it's for more HD, more 3-D, more OTT, more SDV – coupled with a need to provide real quality of experience for subscribers, and the company wants to help operators out in this regard.
The vendor is involved with CableLabs' Ethernet-over-coax (EoC) and DOCSIS Provisioning of EPON (DPoE) initiatives. According to John Dahlquist, vice president of marketing at Aurora Networks, Aurora completed a few years ago a product – BitCoax – that deals with EoC. While it wasn't sought after at the time, since the industry was more worried about what D3 would be, it's now a product that the industry is interested in, and Aurora is in the process of developing a modern take on it, Dahlquist says.
And what Aurora aims to do, says Dawn Emms, Aurora Networks' director of marketing, is have operators install the vendor's Node Platform in the field, which currently is configured to serve traditional cable residential services. But Aurora has developed modules over time that can be added at a later date when the business need is there.
"Subscribers are starting to demand more and more bandwidth. It's a case of making sure what you put out there today isn't something you have to rip out and replace in a couple of years when customers start demanding more and more and more," Emms says.
And there's Aurora's RFoG solution, which is being implemented in many places (it works best in rural areas), that allows operators to take fiber to the home and use DOCSIS 3.0, STBs and EMTAs like they normally would.
The vendor's next big show is the SCTE Canadian Summit, set for March 8-9 in Toronto. The company has been selected for the SCTE Technology Challenge (formerly the SCTE Innovation Showcase) and will have a live demo of its Light-Plex module, along with its recently released full-spectrum DWDM transmitters: the AT3545G series.
