Genband snaps up Cedar Point Communications
IP infrastructure vendor Genband announced this morning that it had signed a definitive agreement to acquire Cedar Point Communications.
Financial terms of the deal, which is slated to close later this month, weren't available.
By acquiring Cedar Point, Genband increased its presence in cable's VoIP market with the addition of Cedar Point's IP switching offerings to its product portfolio.
Cedar Point has 7.5 million lines in service globally and will add Tier 1 customers, including Comcast, Liberty, Charter and Kabel Deutschland, to Genband's customer base.
In addition to its VoIP Safari C3 switch platform for cable, Cedar Point also serves CLECs, wireless operators and universities.
"This acquisition will not only increase our cable market share, but it will also enhance our overall offering to meet the unique and demanding requirements of the high-growth cable market," said Genband CEO Charlie Vogt. "Our combined vision of bringing advanced SIP and multimedia services to the cable market is one of the key drivers for this transaction, particularly as cable operators transition to IP. We look forward to supporting Cedar Point's outstanding customer base with what will now be an even more comprehensive portfolio of solutions."
Cedar Point has roughly 125 employees, and Genband said most of them would become full-time employees once the deal is completed.
Cedar Point CEO and President J.C. Murphy and chief financial officer Don Halsted are slated to work with Genband for a number of months in transitional roles, but there will be no changes to Genband's executive team or board of directors.
Last year, Genband bought most of the assets of the Nortel Carrier VoIP and Application Solutions Business (CVAS). That acquisition combined Genband's media, session and security gateways with Nortel's softswitches, media gateways and application platforms.
At last year's SCTE Cable-Tec Expo, Genband announced Suddenlink had deployed its C20 Converged Softswitch as part of the cable operator's business continuity and disaster recovery preparedness plan.
