Active Broadband enables prepaid broadband option

Once the PPSS system is installed, subscribers can then be allowed to buy a cable modem at retail. When they plug it in, Active Broadband’s PPSS system provides the portal that pops up, activates and provisions the modem, authorizes the standard credit or debit cards customers use to pay with, and manages the service.

AT&T revenue up on U-verse, wireless data growth

AT&T has been gradually extending the reach of its fiber, which serves to help accelerate DSL speeds. The company said that nearly two-thirds of the U-verse TV footprint, cutting across markets in nearly 40 states, can now get broadband speeds up to 45 megabits per second.

Cablevision turns on Wi-Fi access at 11 NJ Transit stations

Cablevision’s Optimum WiFi service is now live at 11 NJ Transit stations. The 11stations, which include the major hubs of NJ Transit, were the first to be outfitted with Optimum WiFi as part of the 20-year partnership between NJ Transit and Cablevision that was announced in June.

TiVo forks out $135 million in cash to buy Digitalsmiths

In an effort to speed up its evolution to cloud-based software-as-a-service (SaaS) offerings, TiVo announced this morning that was buying search and recommendation vendor Digitalsmiths for $135 million in cash. Once it passes the customary closing conditions, the deal is slated to close in the first quarter of fiscal 2015.

Former Moto exec Moloney joins Lantiq’s board

Former Motorola executive Dan Moloney has been named to Lantiq’s board of directors. Munich-based Lantiq is a supplier of chips and software for broadband access and home networking, which is right up Moloney’s alley after his time at Motorola.

CTI Towers buys four towers, hires Ryan for M&A

Comcast Ventures-backed CTI Towers announced today that it had bought four new towers from NTCH in Amarillo, Texas. CTI Towers, which was formed three years ago with towers that were previously owned and operated by Comcast Cable, also announced it had hired Joe Ryan for the new role of vice president of acquisitions.

Google Glass now includes prescription frames

The gadget itself is not changing with this announcement. Rather, Google plans to make various attachments available for people who wear glasses or sunglasses. The company will offer four styles of prescription frames and two new types of shades available to its "explorers" — the people who are trying out Glass.

The company’s Pre-Equalization Analyzer uses technology from Nimble This to analyze the pre-equalization data from cable modems. The new ZCorum tester can not only identify upstream impairments, but also determine the location of the impairment and the severity of the impairment.

Envivio bows new rev of network management system

Once known as 4Manager, it will now be referred to as Guru, though it gets to keep its revision number. Guru 4.0 includes a new and improved user interface, as well as tools such as enhanced monitoring, connectivity enhancements, device auto-discovery and scheduled service control.

Comcast adds video subs in Q4; Cox kicks tires on X1

In its first quarterly gain of basic video subscribers in six and half years, Comcast announced this morning that it had added 43,000 video subscribers in the fourth quarter. Comcast’s robust fourth quarter earnings came on the heels of rumors that it was in talks with Charter Communications to divide up Time Warner Cable.

Suddenlink promotes Pflantz, Sonne

Suddenlink Communications announced it has promoted Mike Pflantz to senior vice president of corporate finance and accounting at the company’s headquarters in St. Louis. Suddenlink also announced that Jared Sonne was promoted to the position of vice president of operations for the company’s Texoma Region.

Liberty Global snaps up rest of Ziggo for $13.7 billion

John Malone can scratch Ziggo off of his “to do” list now that his Liberty Global has picked up the rest of Ziggo that it didn’t already own in a $13.7 billion cash and stock deal. After purchasing a 28.5 percent stake in Ziggo in March of last year, Malone and Liberty Global had been in hot pursuit of the rest of Netherlands-based Ziggo since August.

Comcast to bring online Olympics coverage to TV

Over the past few Olympics, NBC has shown more live coverage over the Internet than it has on TV. For the upcoming Winter Games, Comcast's Xfinity TV subscribers will be able to tap the breadth of that online coverage on their big screens.

AT&T denies Vodafone bid

At the request of the UK Takeover Panel, AT&T Monday confirmed that it does not intend to make an offer for Vodafone.  AT&T recognized that recent speculation regarding a potential transaction involving Vodafone could have affected recent movement in the share price of Vodafone.
