Comcast has unsheathed its Xcalibur project for a trial in Augusta, Ga., that provides both digital TV and Internet access through a set-top box device.

Comcast's Xcalibur project first surfaced during last year's SCTE Cable-Tec Expo after a story by Light Reading Cable.

The Wall Street Journal reported that the Augusta trial is currently underway and provided a few details on the service that Comcast is looking at to battle over-the-top competition from the likes of Netflix, Roku, Apple TV and others.

According to The Wall Street Journal, the Xcalibur trial is currently a walled garden approach that allows access to a limited about of Internet video, as well as to some social networking sites.

The trial also lets Comcast customers search Web videos through their TVs and search across live, on-demand and recorded programming.
