Comcast has taken the wraps off of its free Android-based mobile app that ties into the cable operator's services, such as remote DVR programming and access to home phone voicemails.

Xfinity Mobile AppComcast first released its Comcast Mobile app last year, which was for iPhones and iPod Touch devices on iTunes, and it will rename the app Xfinity Mobile over the coming weeks. Comcast said the original app has been downloaded nearly 1 million times since last year.

Like its Apple counterparts, the Android app allows customers to access their Comcast phone voicemails and forward them to their mobile phones. The Xfinity mobile widget allows them to review their voicemail and e-mail messages, as well as sync all of their contacts via a Universal Address Book.

In addition to remotely programming their DVRs via their Android devices, the app also lets Comcast subscribers view local TV listings, sort by different categories and watch VOD trailers.

Last month, Comcast released its Xfinity TV app for iPad, iPhone and iPod Touch devices, which included the ability to use those devices as TV remote controls. Comcast announced yesterday that the Xfinity TV app would be available to Android devices "in the near future."

When Comcast launched Xfinity TV last month, the app didn't include video streaming, but the nation's largest cable operator said that functionality was in the works. According to a story yesterday by Light Reading Cable, Comcast President Neil Smit said at a UBS AG conference in New York City that the video streaming app for iPads would be available in the coming weeks.

The video-streaming app is called "Play Now," and Comcast is lining up movies and shows from HBO, Starz and Showtime with other content agreements, with programmers to follow.

According to a story by Reuters, Smit also said at the conference that Comcast didn't plan on implementing usage-based pricing for its data customers.
