Sprint and Clearwire have turned on their WiMAX network in New York City, as well as in Tampa and in four cities in the New York metropolitan area and surrounding states, including Hartford and New Haven in Connecticut and New Brunswick and Trenton in New Jersey.

The launch of the network in New York City marks a major milestone for the companies, which have worked to harden the network for the area's challenging urban environment. The network's performance in New York City will be watched closely by analysts, investors and media located there.

"Sprint has provided customers with 4G service since 2008, and we're proud to extend our leadership to six more cities today, including New York City," said Matt Carter, president of Sprint 4G.

Sprint and Clearwire's WiMAX network is now available in 61 cities, and they plan to launch in several major new markets by the end of the year, including Los Angeles, San Francisco, Miami, Denver and Washington, D.C.
