DirecTV increased income and profit in the third quarter, which it attributed largely to its expansion in Mexico and Latin America and ARPU growth in the U.S.

The company said it added a net of 380,000 subscribers, with 206,000 of those adds attributed to DirecTV Latin America and 174,000 to DirecTV U.S.

ARPU at DirecTV increased 4.3 percent, to $88.98, largely due to programming package price increases, higher HD and DVR service fees, and advertising sales, partially offset by an increase in acquisition and retention promotional discounts, the company reported.

Net revenue was up 10 percent to $6 billion, compared with its third-quarter results last year, and net income increased 31 percent to $479 million, compared with the similar period last year.

Mike White, president and CEO of DirecTV, said: "Driven by our industry-leading HD, DVR and interactive services, gross and net subscriber additions increased in both our U.S. and Latin American businesses for the first time in two-and-a-half years, and as a result, we widened our leading position as the world's largest provider of pay-TV services, with over 27 million subscribers."

DirecTV U.S. ended the quarter with 18.93 million subscribers, compared with 18.44 million subscribers reported on Sept. 30, 2009.
