Comcast has dialed up a new phone plan trial in Illinois that allows subscribers to make calls throughout the state without getting hit with long-distance fees.
Comcast's "StateWise" Illinois calling plan lets its Xfinity voice customers place unlimited calls anywhere in Illinois for $29.95 per month.
The plan includes calls to the area codes of 217, 309, 312, 618, 630, 708, 773, 815 and 847 for one price, without any long-distance charges no matter how often subscribers call or how long they talk.
Comcast said the new calling area – stretching throughout Illinois and the entire metro Chicago area – represents a significant expansion of the defined local or metro calling geography of the traditional telephone companies.
Other features of StateWise Illinois include: 12 calling features, including call waiting and caller ID, with optional voicemail, and long-distance calling at 7 cents per minute outside of Illinois.
Comcast previously introduced its "Carefree Minutes Mexico 100" to its Xfinity voice service in Chicago, allowing customers to call their family and friends in Mexico for $4.95 more per month for 100 minutes
Based on the success of that offering, Comcast subsequently rolled out similar calling plans for Western Europe, Latin America and Asia.
