Microtune Inc. has introduced the MicroTuner MT2050, a single-chip tuner that claims to cut radio frequency (RF) costs by almost 25 percent, board space by 20 percent and power by 11 percent. Targeting advanced DOCSIS 2.0 cable modems, new computer-controlled cable modems (CCCMs) and digital interactive set-tops, the MT2050 is priced at $5 per unit in quantities of 10,000 or more.
Freeserve Broadband has inked a deal to deliver its 512 KBPS cable-modem service to NTL Inc.'s customers. Freeserve Broadband via the NTL cable will be available as part of a bundle with digital TV and telephony from NTL Home. The ISP will use the partnership to introduce Freeserve customers to the value of the bundle, Freeserve said in a statement.

The first quarter was a busy one for Insight Communications Company. The cabler transitioned its cable modem customers to its own network, while posting revenue in excess of the Street's expectations. The company reported revenue of $192.2 million, which beat analysts' consensus estimate of $186.4 million, according to Thomson Financial/First Call.
DirecTV Broadband will continue to offer two months of free DSL service to existing cable modem customers through May 31. The company launched the special offer late last year. In addition to the offer's two months of free service, DirecTV Broadband said it will also waive its $49.99 activation fee, putting the total value of the package to about $150.
