Charter Communications has launched its first national philanthropic project, which was designed to improve 25,000 low-income homes across its footprint by 2020. The program, which is called “Charter our Community,” will impact 10 percent of the 250,000 low-income families in Charter communities living in homes deemed unsafe and unhealthy by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD.)
The Wireless Broadband Alliance's annual survey reported that 70 percent of the respondents said their main motivation for deploying carrier grade Wi-Fi in their systems was to improve the customer experience and increase subscriber retention. In addition, 41 percent cited this as the single most important driver to invest in next generation hotspot (NGH) projects ahead of offload.
Cable over builder RCN has beefed up its Music Choice videos by adding more than 3,000 new options on its VOD platform. The new Music Choice videos and original shows, which are available to RCN’s digital TV subscribers for free, represented a five-fold increase over RCN’s previous library.

Intel Corp. said Monday that it bought PasswordBox, a service that saves and remembers passwords so that users can log into different websites without having to remember or type in their passwords. The Santa Clara, California-based chip maker did not disclose financial details of the deal.
UTStarcom is targeting the North American cable operator market with its system for offloading wireless traffic onto a Wi-Fi network. The solution, in use for over a year in other markets, includes a carrier class Wi-Fi AC which supports more than 120,000 access points and over 1.3 million subscribers within a single chassis.
The FCC announced it has worked out an agreement with T-Mobile to ensure the carrier’s customers get accurate mobile broadband speed test readings even after they’ve been throttled. T-Mobile last summer began exempting data speed tests from impacting customers’ data caps, but speed tests under that program displayed full network speeds even if the customer is being throttled back to 128 Kbps or 64 Kbps.
BlackArrow’s Dean Denhart is stepping down as the company’s chief executive officer. He’d held that position for the last 7 years. BlackArrow president Nick Troiano will lead the company moving forward. “Dean has been a key part of BlackArrow’s success and he has positioned us well for the future,” said Troiano.
Kabillion, a VOD network that features content for kids, recently reached a carriage agreement with Cablevision. With the Cablevision deal, Kabillion is now available to more than 50 million homes across the United States. Other programming partners for Kabillion include Comcast, Time Warner Cable, Charter Communications, Verizon and Bright House Networks.
