3Com Corp. will trim 500 jobs from its 5,900-member workforce and transfer some of its corporate activities into its trio of new operating units. The moves are part of 3Com's next phase of its year-old corporate refurbishment. The company doesn't break out where the cuts will come from, says spokesman Brian Johnson, but the paring comes on the heels of last year's 6,000 layoffs.

Microsoft TV upgraded its TV Developer Program and worked deals with two set-top vendors as a program benefit, it says. The program pulls together companies with iTV products and services that run on its Microsoft TV platform. Microsoft says OctalTV SA will supply its 5005 advanced set-top to certain members, and Pace Micro Technology will provide its Di 6000, starting next month.
Eagle Broadband acquired the San Antonio unit of SelectPath, a retail and wholesale wireless messaging company in a cash transaction. Hoping to tackle the multitenant office building market, U.S. RealTel says it will acquire in-building provider Cypress Communications Inc. for about $17.24 million. The deal should close Feb. 28. Under the deal, U.S. RealTel, which owns telecom rights worldwide, would offer $3.50 per share for all outstanding Cypress shares.
