Comcast is rolling out its bot detection and notification service to all of its subscribers nationwide.
Comcast's free Constant Guard Bot Detection and Notification service alerts subscribers when bots infects their computers.
Comcast trialed the service last year in its Denver footprint. Yesterday's announcement said it plans on launching it over the next few months to all of its 16 million Xfinity data customers.
The service automatically notifies customers if their home computer appears to be infected with a bot. A bot is a type of computer virus that allows someone else to take control of a user's computer without the owner's knowledge. Botnet "zombies" are used for spam and phishing campaigns, or to infect other computers.
Comcast's Constant Guard Bot Detection and Notification service combines bot detection technologies with a proactive customer notification system – either through a browser or customer e-mail – that provides a customer with direct assistance to remove a bot and prevent it from infecting other PCs. Once Comcast subscribers are notified about potential problems, they're directed to Comcast's Constant Guard website.
"Internet users need to be aware of online threats – bots being among the most serious – and Comcast's Constant Guard Bot Detection and Notification service is designed to help protect and educate our customers about this growing danger," said Cathy Avgiris, senior vice president and general manager of communications and data services at Comcast. "With October being National Cyber Security Awareness month, it's an ideal time to generate awareness about Internet security and start rolling this program out nationally."
Comcast's Constant Guard resources also include a team of security experts who proactively contact customers in regard to spam and virus-related issues. On the software front, Comcast, which is the nation's largest ISP, provides its customers with Norton Security Suite for free.
