Mobile television company MobiTV says a 'major carrier" will launch services on its white-label convergence offering in the first quarter of next year.

The managed service allows users to begin watching television on one platform, pause the broadcast, then move to another device and continue their viewing session without interruption.

Allen Billings, senior director of product management at MobiTV, says the company began showing prototypes of the service to customers several months ago. The solution will be generally available this quarter, with a carrier-branded consumer-facing release slated for the first quarter of 2011.

Billings says the platform will allow carriers to advance their three-screen convergence offerings without having to deploy significant infrastructure at their own expense.

"It's actually consumer media across multiple devices and showing the industry that there's a service that's available today," Billings says. "The perception of MobiTV as a consumer-facing app developer is something we're thinking might shift somewhat with this announcement."

MobiTV currently offers white-label mobile television services to Verizon Wireless, AT&T, Sprint and T-Mobile. Its convergence platform has its roots in MobiTV's expertise with video optimization and the synchronization of media sessions.

The platform comes equipped with authentication and access control, digital rights management, and DVR capability, as well as live, video-on-demand and downloadable content across all devices.

The company is highlighting its convergence platform at the CTIA Enterprise & Applications conference in San Francisco this week.
