Cablevision's Optimum Wi-Fi service is now available for use by sports fans and concertgoers at Nassau Coliseum in Long Island.

Cablevision said the network at the Nassau Coliseum was designed to support thousands of users simultaneously and that it's the company's largest Wi-Fi hotspot on Long Island.

"Optimum Wi-Fi has proven to be enormously popular with our customers, and we could not be more pleased to be able to make this fast and free wireless Internet access available throughout Nassau Coliseum," said Kevin Curran, Cablevision's senior vice president of wireless development. "Particularly with the explosion of Web-enabled handheld devices and demands on cellular data services, we think Optimum Wi-Fi is going to be a very important and useful enhancement, especially for Optimum Online customers visiting the Coliseum."

With the service, Wi-Fi access is available in the arena, lobby and concession areas. Users who aren't Cablevision subscribers can log on for limited free access to Optimum Wi-Fi, while Optimum Online subscribers have unlimited access.

Optimum Online customers can access Optimum Wi-Fi using portable Wi-Fi-enabled devices – including the iPhone, iPad, BlackBerry and laptop computers – by using a simple sign-on screen. Once a customer logs in to the service by entering their Optimum user ID and password, the network delivers speeds of up to 3 Mbps downstream and 1.5 Mbps upstream.

Earlier this year, Cablevision added an "Automatic Sign In" feature to its Wi-Fi service that allows users to automatically access the company's hotspots'

Since its launch on Long Island in 2008, Cablevision said the size of the Optimum Wi-Fi network on Long Island has more than doubled and now includes more than 500 indoor retail locations.
